For our portfolio project we started planning where we would film our skit. We wanted a location that matched the energy of the movies which often use wide streets, parking lots, or weird crazy areas to create a dramatic atmosphere. According to universal pictures the franchise relied on open spaces to safely film action scenes while still making them look intense and fast paced. Keeping that in our mind we looked for a place tha had enough room for our shots but was also safe and legal to use. We want to film in an alleyway by amc and an empty street by cypress. We tried calling a prison to see if they would let us film there but they said no.
As we reviewed our options and what we had near us in weston we realized that safety and realisim had to work. Even though fast and furious scenes look dangerous filmakers often use camera tricks to make slow movements appear fast. Film riot explans that techniques like forced perspective and low angle shots can make simple actions look more dramatic without putting anyone at risk. We also though and imagined lighting, background noise, and how busy each location was. A quieter area would help us record clean audio and avoid interruptions.
Reflecting on the planning we learned that choosing a film location takes more thought than we expected. Visiting the spots in person helped us understand how the environement would affect our filming. It also made us think more like real directors/film makers. This step showed us how important preparation is.
